Marion Speaks on BBC Radio 5 Live: ADHD and the Stories Behind the Labels

🎙️ ADHD and the Stories Behind the Labels

I’m thrilled to share that I recently appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live on The Stephen Nolan Show, discussing a topic close to my heart; the rise in ADHD diagnoses and what this growing trend may be revealing about the world we live in.

It was a powerful 20-minute conversation exploring questions that many of us are asking:

  • Why are so many people seeking an ADHD diagnosis today?
  • Are we looking at a mental health crisis or a deeper cultural disconnection?
  • What happens when labels become the only route to care and support?

🔍 Behind the Numbers, Real Lives

The NHS recently released figures showing a significant rise in ADHD diagnoses across the UK. But behind these numbers are people; people who have spent years believing they were simply lazy, disorganised, or broken.

In the interview, I asked: What does it say about our society that so many people feel they can’t cope without a label to explain it? Maybe the question isn’t “Why are people getting diagnosed?” but “What’s going on in our world that’s making so many of us feel unwell?”

🧠 ADHD Is Real — But So Is the Context

ADHD is a legitimate diagnosis, and for many, finally receiving it is deeply validating. It gives a name to their experience and often opens the door to support and, yes, medication when appropriate. But this rising demand should also prompt reflection.

As I shared during the interview: “We’re so quick to ask if people are being misdiagnosed, but what if the real issue is people feel broken and unable to function on day to day basis?” Our fast-paced, overstimulating, and achievement-driven culture is often a mismatch for nervous systems shaped by trauma, neurodiversity, or emotional sensitivity.

🧩 Labels Can Help — But They Shouldn’t Define Us

Quoting ideas inspired by thinkers like Dr. Gabor Maté and The Body Keeps the Score, I explored how trauma-related ADHD is not just a “disorder,” but a way the body and brain have adapted to overwhelming experiences. Yet in order to access care, people are often forced to package that story into a neat diagnostic label.

A label can be validating. But it’s only the beginning. The real healing starts when we ask:

👉 What happened to you?
👉 What needs support?
👉 How can we build a world where more people can thrive without needing a label to feel understood?
